Wow, I haven't blogged for about 3 years. Trying to keep a bit more of a balance in my life has meant choosing to spend less time sitting at the computer.<br />
<br />
I have also enjoyed making a few more functional items and found a little bit of time to do some raku pieces for my own enjoyment.<br />
<h3 style="text-align: center;">
My Handmade Ceramic Native Australian Hanging Birds</h3>
I am very happy to say that there have been a few new birds since my last blog. Some I have pictured below aren't new but they are an improvement on the old design, so I have included them too. <br />

The Eastern Yellow Robin or Yellow-Breasted Robin. <br />
<br />
I have a bit of a love for all birds in general (bet you couldn't have guessed lol) but robins and wrens really make my heart sing! So here is another little robin that I am sure you will love too. <br />
<br />
A little bit about this little fellow.<br />

I have made the Gouldian finch before but was never quite happy with how it looked so left it out when it came to making my birds on a regular basis. This one is just a revised version that I am much happier with. The regent bowerbird was brought about as my hubby suggested I make this one. <br />
<br />
Both are available from my Etsy shop (follow the Etsy link on the page). Or email me to ask what stockists have these birds in stock at present. <br />
<br />
This is how I wrap my little treasures that you buy in my Etsy shop. Birds and sculptural pieces are wrapped in hand stamped paper and jewellery comes to you on a sweet little kraft box. If you would like to send a gift directly to a loved one, just mention this in the notes section of my Etsy checkout, include your note wording and I will send your gift directly to their door. <br />

The past few months have been very busy. In the later stages of my pregnancy I was in the studio making as many birds as possible so that when our new baby was born I could time spend time with her and Emily. Our gorgeous little 'Abbie' was born on 1 April. Yes, April fool's day. It really just makes her even more special. I went into hospital on the 31st and since I was induced that same day and being my forth child, we thought she would definitely be born on that day. Not the case and 'Abbie Elizabeth' was born on the afternoon of 1st April. Here's a picture with her big and very proud sister Emily (4). <br />

A few new birds have been added to my range of native Australian birds the last few months. I was asked by a customer on Etsy if I could make a Butcher Bird, a Wedge-tailed Eagle and a White Breasted Sea Eagle. So, as it usually happens, they are now a part of the flock. The butcherbird I will make on a regular basis that is for sure as it is already proving popular. </div>

Hooray!After the madness of pre-Christmas making in the studio, it was actually nice not to be making anything for a few weeks. I am more than ready to get back out there now, with a heap of creative ideas that are ready to flow. <br />
<br />
I am sure you can relate when I say that Christmas was both exhausting and fun at the same time. Lots of gatherings, shopping, organising, cleaning up, going away and coming home to unpacking etc. It never seemed to end. It's madness. Even though it was a hectic time, we spent some quality family time with each other, which after all is what Christmas is about. <br />
<br />
After Christmas, my husband and I made a conscious effort whilst on holidays from work, to do all those big and little jobs around the house and garden that we had been aware that needed doing for some time. With only ten weeks until our baby is due, I can now get back into the studio knowing that the list of things to do - 'Has Been Done'! All my nesting around the house, has been satisfied lol. <br />
<br />
I now have a new list. A wonderful list of 'Creative Things To Do' in the studio. <br />
<br />
Looking forward to what this year will bring creatively and personally.<br />
<br />
Hoping that you have a wonderful 2014 too. <br />

Christmas is only ten days away and my thoughts are straying away from the studio now to spending fun times over the Christmas period with family and friends, relaxing breaks away here and there in our little 30 year old caravan. It's been a very busy, but great year for my family and I am really looking forward to spending some quality time together. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I did my last firing for the year this week, so the kilns get a rest now until the new year. The studio will get a major clean over the Christmas break, my 'list of things to make' will get a work out and I will be ready for a fresh start in the New Year. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I am already contemplating what studio projects lay on the horizon for me next year. It's been sadly over a year since I did a raku firing or pit firing of any kind (how time flies), so that is something that has to make a revival in the new year for sure. I have been so busy with making my little birds, that time has been limited to taking on too many things at once, which is generally my nature. I usually have a million and one creative ideas in my head at any given time lol. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Etsy has proved to be a successful avenue for me to sell my little birds and other treasures. I have been rushed off my feet in November and December in particular keeping up with photographing and listing new items, wrapping and posting parcels all over Australia. It's a great feeling to know that my birds are hanging in the gardens and homes of people all over the country. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Here are a couple of my newest Australian native birds, the 'Rainbow Lorikeet' and 'Australian Red Capped Robin'. I don't have any 'Rainbow Lorikeets' left in stock atm (flying out the door), but if you are interested in purchasing any, request a 'Custom Order via my Etsy shop. The robin however, is listed in my Etsy shop along with a selection of my other native birds.</div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was also asked recently by a couple of different customer's if I could make a few of the English Robins. I decided to make extras and these were snapped up at markets in no time. I also have these in my Etsy shop (link on this blog to my Etsy shop)</div>

I have just been befriended by a lady on facebook letting me know that a book we are both featured in has just been published so I have just purchased myself a copy online. The book is called 'Pit Firing Ceramics: Modern Methods, Ancient Traditions' by Dawn Whitehand. I was approached approx. two years ago by Dawn, and asked to submit photos of works and information to be featured in the book. I am looking forward to reading it and very excited to be included alongside other Pit Firing artists from all over the world. If you are into ceramics, this will prove to be a good book to add to your collection. </div>

I am an earth person. Happiest when I am doing something with my hands and getting dirty. It's my way of feeling connected with the earth. <br />
<br />
We all have people and moments in our life that have a lasting impression on us. It shapes who we are and perhaps what pathways we are to follow with respect to talents, loves etc. I also believe that we are all born with certain passions and talents, we just have to tap into them and discover them. <br />
<br />
I was born in England. A magical moment for me when I was a little girl, was when my parents took us on a family picnic to the English woods. I was about 7 or 8 years of age. It was spring and I cannot begin to tell you how beautiful it was. I was in awe of the impressive old trees like oaks, birch etc reaching up to sky and blocking out the sun. Underneath was an endless sea of blue bells that took my breath away and the fragrance was amazing. That day is still so clear in my mind and the feelings I had as a result, I believe gave me a love and the connection I have today with nature. <br />

My parents emigrated to Australia when I was ten. Australia is the place/country I call home. I love everything about our beautiful country. The flora and fauna constantly have me in awe,. The landscapes, colours and textures are so beautiful and as a creative person, I am constantly taking in my surroundings. </div>

Like many artists, I take inspiration from nature and it is reflected in my work. This is what influenced my range of Australian native birds. The flock (range) is constantly growing. I really love seeing the people who buy them and their appreciation for the love, time and effort that goes into making everyone of them. </div>

If you read my last blog, I mentioned that there was another new bird to my range. The "Rainbow Lorikeet' was a big hit at Coledale Markets on the weekend. Getting busy today making some more today, so its off to the studio. <br />

<a href="http://www.stallholders.com.au/mittagong/">Mittagong Markets info link</a><br />
<br />
If you are in the Christmas shopping mood this Saturday, why not drop by and see what the lovely Mittagong Markets has to offer. It's getting closer to the silly season and generally there are not only the great regular stallholders, but also newbies with plenty of great, unique Christmas present ideas to make buying gifts a real pleasure. <br />
<br />
I have been very busy the last few weeks making some new and exciting Christmas tree decorations as well as my usual, popular hanging birds, which double as beautiful Christmas tree decorations this time of year. My native Australian bird range make a wonderful gift for someone special. They look amazing not only hanging in the garden, but are lovely as a indoor decoration. A special gift for a garden or nature lover. See past blogs for photos of these. <br />
<br />
At Christmas time, I make an arrangement in the centre of my Christmas table using natural gum tree branches in a wide vase or something similar then arrange a selection of my little birds for all to enjoy. It looks so pretty. I have had customers do the same thing and each year they come back at this time of year to see what other birds they can add to their collection. <br />
<br />
My new and latest native Australian bird is the 'Superb Fairy Wren'. These have proved to be very popular at a recent market, but are new for my customers that frequent Mittagong Markets. If you don't want to miss out, get down to see me early on Saturday as they are my best seller! <br />
<br />
Here's a flock of them in the making, all ready for a clear glaze and firing.<br />

It's a great opportunity not only to replenish their stock, but to have a friendly chat. On visiting one of my customer's recently at a lovely boutique florist in Camden, Jennie from ' Merci Bouquet ' happened to mention that her friend in business Nicci from ' Cupcakes in Camden ' used some my little birds recently on on of her wedding cake creations for a window display. Later that day, I searched for Nicci's website to find this pretty photo.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rW0GPHiAazk/Ug2F45Upl6I/AAAAAAAAAmY/uoR9Eyx7n_M/s1600/IMG_0360%5B1%5D.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-rW0GPHiAazk/Ug2F45Upl6I/AAAAAAAAAmY/uoR9Eyx7n_M/s320/IMG_0360%5B1%5D.JPG" width="213" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
What a unique use for my little wrens. I am suggesting ideas all the time to my customers for their use, but this I would not have thought of. As it happens Nicci and I think very much alike creatively and I am looking forward to working with her in the future with various ideas.<br />
<br />
Lots more happening in my studio at the moment. I have added yet another Australian native bird to my series. Here's Willy Wagtail. Plus, I have made a realistic version of a a Superb Fairy Wren or more commonly known as the BlueWren. They are at the drying stage, so more picks at a later date.<br />

How time flies...<br />
<br />
Since my last post, we have adopted a new dog who we call 'Ollie'. Ollie is about 12-15mnths old and quite frankly, a menace but Emily (our 3 yr old) loves him. He is the world's biggest chewer and despite having a box full of doggie toys, he has a particular fancy for shoes. We came home one day to a sea of trashed shoes on our patio, after he cleverly lifted the lid of our outdoor shoebox. I am not kidding when I say that I had to throw out twenty something shoes. We then bought a new shoebox complete with locking clips either side of the lid. Glen forgot to clip both sides one afternoon and there went my new joggers. Anyway, despite all of that he really is a nice dog, just a bit pesty. Which is why Ollie and Emily probably get along so well LOL. They seem to understand each other. PS. I quite like having a studio dog again too :)<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXBzGOsLVm8/UZSlGOSeokI/AAAAAAAAAlc/70zHwWDn2S0/s1600/Ollie.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" pua="true" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-cXBzGOsLVm8/UZSlGOSeokI/AAAAAAAAAlc/70zHwWDn2S0/s320/Ollie.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v5S0IJ4j3ko/UZSlXxihsUI/AAAAAAAAAlk/XrKw05wX9BE/s1600/Emster.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" pua="true" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-v5S0IJ4j3ko/UZSlXxihsUI/AAAAAAAAAlk/XrKw05wX9BE/s320/Emster.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My two studio pests. Not much room for me in there now days. </div>
<br />
Recently, I made a conscious decision to spend less time on the computer to make for more time in the studio and to spend with Emily, so that's one of the reasons for my slackness in blogging. The other is that I now have a business relationship with a few boutique retail outlets, so I am busy making stock to keep them happy which is great. It goes to say though that having a 3 yr old in our house means my free time is limited. If Emily is not hanging off my leg, or having a melt down, I am actually trying to spend some quality time with her. Thank goodness, meltdowns are becoming less frequent. Phew. Then, there's the housework. If only I had a housecleaner..... keep dreaming Jan.<br />
<br />
As a frequent stallholder at a craft market in Mittagong NSW, (link here <a href="http://www.stallholders.com.au/mittagong/">Mittagong Markets</a>), I have noticed a pattern and that is, that people don't want or don't have alot of money to spend at markets these days. So, now I tend to make alot of smaller pieces that I can keep under $20. I still make my one of artistic pieces and they are always going to be a passion of mine, but for markets, smaller and cheaper is better. <br />
<br />
For those that don't already know, I make a variety of things out of mud, from functional pieces, to sculptural work and then there is my love of birds, plants and all things earthy and old looking. Here are two new hanging Australian birds for this weekends Mittagong Markets - The Kookaburra and the Magpie. Plus I have a heap of beautiful brooches along the same theme as my hanging birds.<br />

Sarah Lamond from Artsnic Photography does wedding photography, family portraits and artistic photography. She contacted me a couple of weeks ago asking if I would be interested in selling work in her new gallery, to which I said... YES PLEASE!<br />
<br />
Last night was the official opening night. There was a small gathering and the general vibe and feel of the gallery was really nice. It is a pleasure to be asked to have my work on display in her gallery, especially in a town that is dear to my heart. <br />
<br />
Sara has on display some of my birds including a collection of Australian birds, a dry glazed vase, some raku pieces and a collection of pendants<br />
<br />
I quickly put together some of my pendants yesterday on little cards I had at home and took them along last night. They were well received as was my other work. Made a few sales. It's always really great to talk to people who are interested to know more about the process of my work and to meet and talk to other like minded people and last night was one of those opportunities to do just that. <br />

This is a short visual diary of our trip. We took hundreds of photographs, but I have chosen just a handful to show some of the great times we had along the way. <br />
<br />
Apologies to those that usually follow my blog for pottery reasons. I am going to bore you today with some family pics as it's a great way for me to connect with family and friends about our holiday. <br />
<br />
We were very impressed with Victoria. We visited many places along our journey and despite the fact that the countryside is starved of rain at the moment, its a beautiful state, with so many quaint, old fashioned, historic towns to drive through and so much open space in between. The major roads in and around Melbourne are fantastic and a pleasure experience in comparison to Sydney.<br />
We left home and headed for Jervis Bay on the South Coast of NSW. We stayed for 3 days at a place called 'Green Patch' then from there drove to Jindabyne. We then travelled over Snowy Mountains and the 'Great Dividing Range' to Victoria. Melbourne for a quick visit, then along the 'Great Ocean Road', Ballarat, Bendigo, Echuca (Murray River) then home. Lots of pretty towns and places in between but basically that was our trip. <br />
<br />
I am not going into length about our trip as it will bore the socks off you. Photos say it all, plus a few comments to go with them.<br />

<br />
It's been a while since my last post. I trust everyone had a lovely Christmas and New Year. I had a break from potting over Christmas and all of January. Been giving my dodgy shoulder (partial tear) a bit of a rest. <br />
<br />
This week has been mental. We are heading off on a road trip to Melbourne in the morning and it's been a week of organising, appointments, decorating birds and pendants, packing and firing the kiln, packing the caravan and last minute housework ( I like coming home to a clean house). <br />
<br />
Back into it the last couple of weeks. My first firing for the year was more of my little Australian Birds and just today I unpacked a load of Pendants and some more birdies. Some examples below. I have been working on some more varieties. More pics for follow after I get back from holidays. <br />

<br />
Recently, on a visit to my husband's grandmother, I asked if she had any handmade lace or crocheted doilies that I have to use in my pottery work. She was very happy to know what I wanted to use them for and gave me a collection to take home. I am so happy to be using something so precious in my work that has a family history. I have used some to make some lovely marks on the pendants below.<br />

Very excited to be leaving for Melbourne in the morning, but even better is that I discovered our trip coincides with the <a href="http://www.potteryexpo.com/Warrandyte/index-wdyte.htm"><span style="color: red;">'Pottery Expo'</span></a>. It is held at Warrandyte on the banks of the Yarra River. I only realised it was happening after one of my friends from <a href="http://www.mudcolony.blogspot.com/"><span style="color: red;">'Mud Colony'</span></a> mentioned it in a post. Thanks!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Why don't you catch up with the 'Mud Colony' family to see what everyone else has been doing. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Enjoy your weekend everyone. Until next time. </div>

This week we have had our bi-annual Council Clean Up in our suburb. We always manage to find things to throw out as does everybody, BUT I always manage to accumulate a few MORE things much to the disappointment of my husband. He says I have a problem. I just love to look for things to save.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This time I managed to SAVE - A wonderful old fruit crate. It still has the original labels on it. The delivery label is also still on it too and it is dated 1970. I plan to use this on my market stall as a display item. </div>

<br />
I also picked up a lovely old timber door with brass fittings. Picture of the door I found and a pic of the proposed project in store for the door below that. <br />

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another great find was an old wooden ladder. One side, was completely broken, so I removed and replaced it with some oak we had left over from a reno project. I sanded and oiled it and added some recycled hardwood fence pailings and made a great shelf display unit. I might use it as a display for my pots at the markets. Best of all, it cost me nothing. </div>

My Galah's, Kingfisher's and Cockatoo's look great. More to go in this week too. Crimson Rosellas and King Parrots as well as my standard ones. Now to get busy putting the ribbons on each one of these so they can hang up and be enjoyed. I have them hanging in my garden. They look bright and pretty and lead your eye around the garden. Many have been bought to hang on the Christmas tree too. These make a lovely, inexpensive Christmas Gift. If you are interested in purchasing any of these, email me for me details. I am happy to post to anywhere in Australia. Merry Christmas everyone and keep an eye out for my next kiln opening. <br />

I have been slack in the blogging department this last couple of weeks as I have had my hands busy with making a last run of things for my next market in December. I have also decided to invite friends,family and locals to a pottery garden party at home in early December. As my next market is at Mittagong, having a party at home makes it closer and more personal for friends and family.</div>

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thanks for reading my post today. Feeling a tad overwhelmed at the moment. You know what it's like when you know that you have a certain number of days until the next market. Which broken down into bits, means that you have stuff all time left to make, dry, fire, decorate and fire. Arghhh.... Anyway, BREATH IN, BREATH OUT...... it will all be okay. Well, that is what I keep telling myself. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I feel like I have a hundred and one things to do. YET, I keep making more things, just to make sure.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For those that read my last post, Mittagong Markets went quite well. It blew an ABSOLUTE GAIL all day which was horrible. If you attend markets with your work, you will sympothise with me about windy days at markets. It was my first time there as a stallholder, so I was not sure what to expect. I have not long been back on the market scene. Did it years ago when my eldest daughters (19 and 17) were little. Now that I am home with a 2yr old, I think I have time to do it all again. Hmmm.....</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have tried a few local craft markets in my area, but found that there just weren't enough people frequenting them. Times have changed. My biggest seller at the markets are these hanging birds. I make Christmas decorations as well this time of year, which are also popular, but these little birds are my bread and butter. I guess they are pretty and CHEAP at $4 and $5. I probably sell them far too cheaply considering the time and effort that goes into making them but hey, they sell. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I started out by making a few very basic bird shapes and have now expanded to include more detailed birds like Kingfisher, Cockatoo, Major Mitchell, Galah, Willy Wagtail and Parrots. They do take me alot longer, so I might add another few dollars to the price of the new ones? </div>

Yes, thats right. I will be loading the ute on Friday evening and taking off at first light on Saturday morning to the beautiful little town of Mittagong on the NSW Southern Highlands. Its an early start but I have to be at Mittagong Markets and all set up by 8am. I am hoping as always, for a lovely sunny day with NO WIND and lots of people. Fingers crossed. <br />
<br />
I know you don't really want to think about it but Christmas is only Eight weeks away. So, why not drop into the markets this Saturday 20 October to start your Christmas shopping. Its a lovely drive and not only are there heaps of great things to buy at the markets, but there are plenty of other great things to do and places to visit whilst in the Southern Highlands. Hope to see you there.<br />

It brings people together who are likeminded and equally passionate about the same thing. I recently had the pleasure of meeting a new friend brought about by a our shared love for clay and raku firing. Rhonda Morris lives about 30 - 40 mins from my home in Appin NSW and we met for the first time simply because we share an interest. We intially met via the American website 'Cone 6 & Other Ways With Clay' <a href="http://www.cone6pots.ning.com/">www.cone6pots.ning.com</a> The founder of the website George Lewter was calling for potters around the world to host a raku firing day and invite potters to get together for this event. As it turned out, Rhonda and I are were the only two in the world that ended up getting together for a raku firing day. Rhonda and I had a lovely afternoon. We chatted, glazed pots then as the sun went down we set up for the firing. Despite a very windy evening, our raku firing was fun and a success. It is definately something that I would love to do again. Here are some pics of our firing. <br />

It is a harsh and beautiful place at the same time. A landscape like no other. Not going into much detail as the photos say it all. I was a fantastic place to visit and we have some great memories to take with us forever. <br />

These lovely little treasures can be admired for years to come by parents and relatives. I have tried to keep them fairly inexpensive and at $35 each for what you see in the photos, so they are quite affordable too. The whole process is quite simple. I take along pre-rolled soft slabs to the day care centre and have the children press their hands straight into the soft clay. I then bring them home to trim and decorate. They take about a week to dry and are then fired twice in my kiln. I am looking at expanding to other day care centres in my area in the coming months. If you are interested in finding out more about these, please email me and I will be happy to answer any questions. Or call me direct on mobile 0418 180 636.<br />

My inspiration came from doing a bit of gardening and appreciating all the different textures of the various plants in our garden. They are a nice little piece to sell, that can be used as a trinket bowl for rings, ear rings, paperclips etc. People don't seem to think much about parting with a few dollars as a pose to the more expensive pieces. I really enjoyed making them. Single fired to 1200 deg c, I underglazed the textured areas inside and then it wiped back to highlight the plant design, then a clear glaze was applied to the inside only. The underside was left unglazed, as I like the contrast to the glazed interior and also shows the fingermarks of the maker during the making process giving them a very earthy and handmade quality.<br />
<br />
Here is the clear glaze recipe that I call 'Perfect Clear'.<br />
<br />
Perfect Clear (can also be single fired)<br />
Cone 5 -6<br />
<br />
Soda Feldspar 40<br />
Gerstley Borate 30<br />
Ball Clay 20<br />
Silica 10<br />
<br />
It is good to brush on with a wide mop brush and seems to even out nicely during firing.<br />

<br />
I used some leaves from my garden to make the leaf design on the front. It was made by wrapping a soft slab around a cylinder, then after removing the cylinder, I pushed the top together and pushed a dowel right through to make the hole. A base was added and impressed decoration once the piece was a little firmer.<br />
<br />
To decorate, I brushed copper carbonate onto the bisque fired surface then washed back a little so that the copper carb remained in the textured areas. The whole pot was then sprayed with a 'White Crackle' and glazed and fired to 1000deg cent in my raku kiln.<br />

Waiting for some fine weather to fire some more pieces that I have ready....Janhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/01905329210747276898noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1472863206870677918.post-30030602910695311452012-04-15T18:09:00.002-07:002012-04-17T21:54:13.532-07:00Mucking Around With 'Dry Glazing' Techniques - Cone 6<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;"><strong>Dry Glazes and Engobes for Cone 6 </strong></span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">This is obviously NOT to be used for functional pieces (for those that are new to ceramics), only sculptural pieces. Best when used over heavy texture, carving, sprigging etc and applying the engobe in varying thicknesses in combination with the dry glaze.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">These recipes and techniques come from an Australian ceramic artist by the name of Simone Fraser. I have long admired Simone’s work. The recipes and techniques below were obtained whilst studying ceramics at Hornsby TAFE some years ago. Her website is well worth a visit to see some examples of how she still uses these engobes, dry glazes and techniques. <a href="http://www.simonefraser.com.au/">http://www.simonefraser.com.au/</a> </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Step One -</span></b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;"> Apply Engobe to leatherhard clay over texture and bisque fire to Cone 06. You can cover the entire tile/piece or sponge back in places to reveal the clay body underneath, which gives you another variation (very nice). </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">I don't nearly have enough texture on these tiles for this to work effectively, but at least it's a guide. When heavier texture is used, it gives the ability to apply the engobe thickly and then remove some in the high areas giving better results.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">Photo below is just to give you an idea of the colour of the engobe on its own after bisque firing. You can also add more oxide quantity to each engobe base than I have here. Additionally, you can make up other colours. Up to you. Test, test, test. The engobes don't look like much when initially fired to Cone 06 but at Cone 6 with dry glazes etc over the top, they work their magic. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><br />

</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Step Two -</span></b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;"> After bisque firing the engobed tiles, I apply various oxides washes over engobes then sponge off/back in completely in areas to ensure that the underlying engobe is also visible. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">NOTE: In all of the tiles shown here I have used a 'Rutile' wash (resulting in red) and a 'Manganese' wash (resulting in a metallic dark brown to black). You will notice that the wash is prominent in the deeper texture here but that is up to you. Also, other oxides work too. Again test. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">When I was taught at college, we were only taught to use the engobe and dry glazes in combinations. I have found that adding the oxides wash just adds another dimension.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Step Three -</span></b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;"> I then sponge on the 'Dry Glazes' so that they appear on the very top surface. This allows the underlying engobe, oxide wash and clay surface to show through. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">There are endless possibilities with this dry glazing technique. They can be sponged on, dipped, brushed on and then wiped back. I like sponging on or brushing using a stiff fan brush as it then just touches the surface as I am trying to keep the deeper texture free from glaze. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">I have not covered all the variations as they are endless. I find that it works well to use contrasting engobes/oxides under the glaze to achieve the best results.</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><br />
</div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">Here are 3 tiles and how I decorated each one. I see that I have alot of improving to do with this techniques, but trial and error is the key to success. </span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><b><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Tile One</span></b></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MlZ9hzmOlrY/T4ttEmY5mUI/AAAAAAAAARE/ctABQ7t4n-o/s1600/IMG_1008.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; cssfloat: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" nda="true" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-MlZ9hzmOlrY/T4ttEmY5mUI/AAAAAAAAARE/ctABQ7t4n-o/s320/IMG_1008.JPG" width="320" /></a></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 6pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">This tile has the following;</span></div><div class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0cm 0cm 0pt 36.75pt; mso-list: l0 level1 lfo1; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto; tab-stops: list 36.0pt; text-indent: -18pt;"><span style="color: black; font-family: Symbol; font-size: 10pt; mso-bidi-font-family: Symbol; mso-fareast-font-family: Symbol;"><span style="mso-list: Ignore;">·<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman";"> </span></span></span><span style="color: black; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 10pt;">Engobe with 4% Chrome added to the base.
